Medicare: What You Need to Know

Medicare is a health insurance program for: people age 65 or older, people under age 65 with certain disabilities, and people of all ages with End-Stage Renal Disease (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a kidney transplant).

Part A (Hospital Insurance)

That’s right! Medicare Part A primarily helps with hospital-related services, like inpatient care, skilled nursing, hospice, and certain home health care services. As you mentioned, most people don’t pay a premium for Part A because it’s funded through payroll taxes during the years they work. This is often referred to as the “Medicare tax” that both employees and employers contribute to.
To receive Part A benefits, there are some conditions beneficiaries must meet, like qualifying for inpatient care at a hospital or meeting specific needs for skilled nursing care, for example. It’s important to note that Part A doesn’t cover everything—there are limits to what it pays for, and patients might still be responsible for certain costs like deductibles and co-pays.

Part B Medical Insurance

What Medicare Part B Covers:

  • Doctors’ services: This includes visits to specialists, routine checkups, or emergency room visits.
  • Outpatient care: This refers to medical services you receive without being admitted to the hospital, such as X-rays, lab tests, and certain surgeries that don’t require an overnight stay.
  • Preventive services: Includes screenings, vaccines (like flu shots), and counseling to prevent diseases or catch them early.
  • Durable medical equipment (DME): This includes things like wheelchairs, walkers, and oxygen equipment, which are medically necessary for certain conditions.
  • Home health care: As long as it’s medically necessary, Part B covers services from certain home health care providers, such as physical therapy, if you qualify.
  • Mental health services: This can include outpatient mental health care, such as therapy and counseling.
